A seven-step framework for goal achievement
As I started seeing results on my first five goals, I noticed a pattern. I made notes on my experience with each goal. These notes helped me reflect and connect the dots in the process. I kept these notes handy to ensure they helped steer me in the right direction.
In case, you’re curious about my first five goals; I list them below. I have added details on the rationale behind these goals below.
Lose 15 kilograms (33 pounds). I weighed 89 kilograms (or 196 pounds), my waistline measured 38 inches, and I wore extra-large clothes to hide my love handles. I wanted to reach my ideal weight.
Learn to swim. I was afraid of water and I wanted to overcome this fear.
Become a confident public speaker. I was terrified of speaking in public. It showed in workplace meetings. I mumbled and fumbled in front of a group. I didn’t like it.
Learn one form of martial arts. I liked Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in my teenage years. I wanted to learn Karate. This dream hadn’t materialized; now I had a second chance as an adult, so I wrote it on the list.
Donate blood 50 times. I had donated six times before writing this goal. I knew the value of blood donation through a family member’s experience. I wanted to continue doing it consistently.
To get help from experts, I devoured books on goals, happiness, existentialism, positive psychology, and mental fitness. I applied what I learned. Some books gave information; some provided validation. They validated my approach to goal achievement.
I have put all those patterns and practical ideas into a seven-step goal achievement framework.
As I stated at the beginning of my book Beyond Your Limits, the world doesn't need more information. However, I want to show how we all can achieve our goals with simple and repeatable steps. My objective in this section is to highlight how simple it can be to make progress toward our goals.
Section 1 of my book is all about demonstration, where I narrated my goals in 40,000 words. Section 2, encompassing 4,000 words, focuses on information. A lot more demonstration than information!
I sincerely hope this seven-step framework will inspire you to start your journey with expansive goals. These seven steps will help you define your goals and achieve them.
Begin with the end in mind.
Become accountable.
Define milestones.
Take one day at a time.
Bounce back.
Quit strategically.
Enjoy the journey.
The next seven posts in this newsletter will give you a detailed description of these seven steps.
Let’s dive into the first step in the next post.
